It’s a superhero-filled batch of movie trailers at Sneak Peeks this week. Expect laughs, action, mutants and the return of a certain cosmic clan featuring a trigger-happy raccoon. And a baby played by Alec Baldwin. Yep, you read that correctly. Whatever will they think of next?
Logan – 20th Century Fox
First up, a terrific trailer for the third and final Wolverine film, Logan. Set in the year 2024, Hugh Jackman returns as Logan (Wolverine) whose healing abilities are slowly fading away while Professor Charles Xavier has Alzheimers. Together, they must cope with the loss of the X-Men after Nathaniel Essex and his corporation has left the world in ruins. Logan must defeat Essex with the help of a young girl named Laura Kinney, “a female clone of Wolverine”.
Joining Jackman are the likes of Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook and Stephen Merchant. This film is significant as it marks the final performance from Jackman as Wolverine after appearing in every main entry in the X-Men franchise to date.
The trailer to this film is phenomenal. It doesn’t have the tone of a normal superhero movie trailer, but rather a dark edge that almost pushes it towards looking like a drama film. Producer Simon Kinberg has revealed that the film will be rated R in the United States and is violent and “kind of like a western in its tone”. It certainly looks that way from the trailer, which also does a good job of not giving too much of the plot away. Logan will be released in March.
The Boss Baby – DreamWorks Animation
Next, as promised, Alec Baldwin as a baby. The Boss Baby tells the story of seven-year old Tim who is jealous of his “fast-talking, briefcase carrying” baby brother (played by Alec Baldwin). When he goes on a mission to win back the affection of his parents, he uncovers a secret plot by the CEO of Puppy Co. which revolves around his baby brother and threatens to destabilise the balance of love in the world.
If you can make sense of that then please do comment below and let us know what that all means. It’s very difficult to make sense of. Perhaps it will be a lot clearer in the film, but for now we’re stumped. The trailer doesn’t go into any of that, instead focusing on Tim discovering that his baby brother can talk like Alec Baldwin.
Only time will tell as to what the film will be like as it is kind of difficult to tell from the trailer. The Boss Baby is also released in March.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
When Guardians of the Galaxy was released, its success came as a bit of a surprise. The characters, to those who were not comic book fans, were pretty much unknown but still managed to captivate audiences. It was a good example of what the Marvel films can do when they aren’t afraid to poke fun at their own franchise. In this viewer’s opinion, the film was somewhat eclipsed by Deadpool, which is probably the best Marvel film to date, however, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a welcome prospect.
Set two months after the events of the first film, the Guardians of the Galaxy travel throughout the cosmos and struggle to keep their newfound family together, while helping Peter Quill learn more about his true parentage. The film features a fantastic cast, with most returning from the first film, which includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Elizabeth Debicki and Kurt Russell.
It is a sensational cast, and with James Gunn back in the writer and director’s chair it looks to be a promising return from the Guardians when it is released in May.
So there you have it, another look at the latest movie trailers. Check back next week for another Sneak Peek.
