Few hip hop groups have remained as fresh and true to their roots as The Pharcyde. When they first hit the scene back in the 1990’s, gangsta rap was king – with few groups willing to go against the grain. With the release of “Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde” this visionary group broke down these boundaries, unleashing one of the greatest albums ever made. Drawing comparisons with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, they balance their left-field vision with the South Central sensibilities of the time, and a lyrical style and rhythm that remains unparalleled to this day.
The Pharcyde play Brighton’s Concorde 2 next Sunday, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of their second release Labcabincalifornia. This album saw the group’s style evolve further, marking a move into visual artistry epitomised by the video for “Drop”. By collaborating with film director Spike Jonze they created what is to this day one of the best music videos ever made. The group remain one of the biggest draws in hip hop and will be spreading their influence for years to come.
The Pharcyde play Concorde 2 on Sunday 3rd April. For more information or to book, click here.
