REVIEW: Kansas Smitty’s

Whatever your judgements are of the area and their hangouts, put them all to one side because what they’re actually doing here every Wednesday is simply giving Londoners a chance to experience some of the UK’s best live jazz musicians.

Three young, passionate musicians entertained the crowd with Whiplash-like intensity building high-octane climaxes with each song; those ice-cold juleps were welcome coolants in the heat of the impassioned sixty-capacity venue.

Based underneath Off Broadway, the julep menu was created by Milk & Honey general manager, Sean Fennelly who’s friends with the in-house band. And the eight-drink menu is mouth-watering good! Smitty’s Julep has to be tried: it contains bourbon, Fernet Branca, raisin, peach, cassia bark and mint – so good the bar’s put its name on it. Then there’s Prima’s Julep, which was another favourite on the night: bourbon, banana, coconut, cinnamon, vanilla, liquorice root and mint. You’d think that bourbon wouldn’t work with fruits and dessert flavours, right? Well it does.

Kansas Smitty’s offers a slice of America’s southern hospitality, flavours and culture, and it’s not to be missed.
