London’s Best Butchers

London’s Best Butchers

It’s National BBQ Week, the 18th of its kind as a matter of fact. The week – from 26th May to 1st June – is a way for communities to get together, share their recipes and expose particular foods they enjoy on their barbecues in order for others to try something new. For the carnivorous among us, no doubt we’ll be consuming a lot more meat during this week. Which means butchers will be busy. We’ve therefore selected London’s best butchers from north, south, east and west of the city. So, check these out and support them (and your local butcher).

North: Godfreys

Arguably the most popular butchers in north London, the family-run Godfreys is an award-winning place thanks to its high-quality cuts of poultry, meat, sausages, and pies. They also sell traditional (cheaper) options, which include onglet, ox cheeks and rabbit, as well as their very own homemade stocks. Advance orders are taken for more exotic options too, particularly the three-bird roast of goose, capon and pheasant.

Godfreys, 7 Highbury Park, London, N5 1QJ (020 7226 2425). Open 8am-6pm Mon-Sat.

East: Ginger Pig

So good is the produce sold at Ginger Pig that many of London’s best restaurants source their cuts of meat directly from this place. And you can too for your barbecue being as they have five locations around London. The best out of the lot though is the Hackney, which is always buzzing. As well as selling outstanding cuts of meat, they also sell great pickles, pies and sausage rolls.

Ginger Pig, 99 Lauriston Road, London, E9 7HJ (020 8986 6911). Open 9am-5.30pm Tue; 9am-6.30pm Wed-Fri; 9am-6pm Sat; 9am-3pm Sun.

South: William Rose

As you can see in the picture, there’s usually a queue at William Rose butchers. But that is because they really are that good! An historic butcher, this East Dulwich establishment is popular for two reasons: they sell excellent cuts of meat and they sell them for a very fair price. What’s more, they support the local community by offering ‘weekly specials’ in order to provide cheaper options for those on a lower income and whom are less fortunate than others.

William Rose, 126 Lordship Lane, London, SE22 8HD (020 8693 9191). Open 8am-5.30pm Mon-Sat.

West: Provenance

Provenance is one of the newest butchers (opened in Notting Hill in 2013) but already one of the city’s best. The team here – Struan Robertson (founder), Tom Gibson, Guy Gibson, and Erin Hurst (Kiwis) – all left regular desk jobs in order to master their chosen trade and fulfil their ambitions. The three Kiwis have influenced the massively popular grass-fed wagyu beef burgers from New Zealand, while the marinated whole chickens and lamb kebabs are also prime choices for any barbecue.

Provenance, 33 Kensington Park Rd, London, W11 2EU (0207229 8814). Open 8am-7pm Mon-Sat, 10am-4pm Sun.
