What do you get when you put a well-respected dance music record label together with a duo of revered live techno DJs, for one night only? A thumping showcase that’ll make your heart rethink it’s own beat.
In what is their first London appearance in over five years, Move D and Jonah Sharp’s revered live techno moniker rEAGENZ will headline at Oval Space for Dial Records’ label showcase on 18th March.
Dial Records has written itself into dance music history as one of the scene’s most highly esteemed modern record labels. The Berlin label and its various offshoots — Sky Walking, Laid — exclusively dedicate their style to rich, elegant, house music and are showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to producing formative dance records: Dial have a momentum all of their own.
And to only make that pendulum swing faster and higher at this label showcase, the live project of Move D and Jonah Sharp rEAGENZ will take to the decks and certainly up the crowd frenzy scale by at least four notches. David Moufang — aka Move D — surprisingly has dabbled in classical percussion studies in his younger years, as well as a jazz guitarist in bands. Albeit, upon discovering the scene of ambient techno in a Mannheim club back in ’89, he began to pile his trade as a DJ, spinning electro, funk and jazz — and of course, becoming a serious clubber.
Since then, his collaborative ventures have provided spectacular evidence of his growing ability as a producer and composer. He his an insanely popular, multi-talented artist whose DJ sets are renowned for their depth, versatility and sheer great fun.
The other half of rEAGENZ, Jonah Sharp is equally as talented and it’s not surprising these two ended up collaborating. The Scottish native started his musical life as a drummer playing in art-school punk bands, before discovering the sounds of Detroit techno, Chicago house and electronic music and eventually moving to San Fransisco in 1992 to establish his own label, Reflective.
Together with Move D, Jonah Sharp has been recording warm, hardware-made electronic music as rEAGENZ for over 20 years. A deep, psychedelic trip through analog soundscapes and 909 rhythms, their productions have since featured on eminent record labels Workshop, The Bunker and Source.
Also on the bill is Dial co-founder Lawrence — one of the chief curators for the label who’s tasteful selection of dance music is well-regarded. Another addition to the thrilling night is Carsten Jost, another brain behind Dial Records. On his last two dates with Oval Space, he stole the show with a series of exquisite, obscure house records, mixed with panache, precision and skill.
One can only anticipate this night is going to be a heads-down techno-stomping escalation of fun.
