Since opening in 2015, the pioneering, band-led jazz and julep bar Kansas Smitty’s has rapidly become one of our favourite places to hang out —because honestly, what’s not to love about a cosy, underground bar with prodigious live music, singular infused-spirit American cocktails, and an self-effacing atmosphere?
The Kansas Smitty bar was in fact an ironic development in the search for a venue for the Kansas Smitty House Band —and as it turns out, said development has been quite the success.
The KSHB have not only given London’s ‘speakeasy jazz’ scene quite the boost by de-alienating the snooty genre to many of us. Comprised of eight 20 and 30-somethings, they’ve cracked open the niche genre to a fresh, young audience and swung in some awesome original swing music, real people and great cocktails to East London.
And now, they’re not only broadened their selection of live music but also their cocktail menu. The latest cocktail list at Kansas Smitty’s is a vital part of the venue’s new offering, which has evolved from purely jazz and juleps. They’ve kept the selection of signature juleps, and simply added four new house cocktails, designed to continue to complement the bespoke bar setting and rollicking live music.
Named with their musical tastes in mind, examples include: First Dance (Courvoisier VSOP infused with raspberry, peach, tonka bean, orgeat and topped with prosecco); Corcovado (Cachaça infused with sage and Averna); and Azalea (Campari, Bols Genever infused with sloe berry, citrus, dry sherry). All at a stellar price of only £9.
From the weekly Poker Night and evenings of vinyl and juleps, to Smitty-curated one-off live performances and soulful jazz nights, this East London venue will continue to be the heart of London’s young jazz scene and turn its (jazz) snooty reputation on its saxophone and trumpets horns.
