The Saturday Night party thrown by Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin has always endeavoured to something more than your typical soiree, and this weekend is no exception. This is the first time the Mister will step out before dark on the sixth day: yes, afternoon tea time is now party time.
Mister Saturday Night will run from 5pm to 11pm on Saturday 5th March, with DJs Carter and Harkin holding it down all night long at St John at Hackney. If you were at any of the Sunday parties in 2015, you’ll know they were pretty awesome. Even more brilliant is that this time, the venue is an eighteenth century grade 2 listed medieval church — the perfect place to hang their mirror ball in.
The collaboration came about back in 2008 when Justin – who was the music director and a resident DJ at the then-revered APT – asked Eamon to play alongside Afrika Bambaataa at a weekly residence. Sharing an equal love for great music and passion for building a community, then colluded to create Mister Saturday Night.
Starting out in a downtown club in Manhattan, they moved onto secrete backyards and loft spaces in Brooklyn in order to really nail that home-grown approach to party making, sans the fairy-bread and vanilla cake.
Basically they find the right space, install their insanely amazing six-point Funktion-One system, make it feel like home (or your mate’s place) and present some rippin’ music (almost all from vinyl) all night (or all day) long. Granted, St John at Hackney might not resemble your home (well at least not ours), but given it’s such an awe-inspiring place for any live music, it’s bound to be an impressive evening.
The Mister Saturday Night staff are notoriously friendly and genuine (akin to that cake-giving neighbour we all adore…) and this weekend they’ve been kind enough to consider our appetites too by supplying some tasty food to keep our stamina up for the dance floor. Moreover, they’ve made drinks so affordable that there’ll be no need to eat plain rice for the rest of the month.
Here’s hoping the St John at Hackney party is only one of many more to come this year. Anyone got a spare backyard? Or a spare church?
