What do you when you turn two? Throw a huge four-day long party, that’s what. Number 90 Bar & Kitchen, the spectacular canal-side venue in Hackney Wick might only be turning the ripe old age of two, but they are celebrating in style. Confetti included.
Turning two? Wait a minute, toddler parties usually consist of play-dough activities, treasure hunts, gorging of crisps and candy, followed by the kids passing out at 4pm from pure exhaustion and sugar-highs. And as extravagant as this is in the eyes of the child, we’re pretty certain that Number 90’s 2nd birthday party could take the cake for the biggest bash given their festive record.
Festivities kick off on Thursday 17th March for friends, family and press with revered artists creating bespoke Number 90 masterpieces, live music and a special DJ set from Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay. There’s also going to be a “dry ice” ice-cream van loitering around.
Friday night is when the new-terraced decking will come in handy — room to spill out on to the canal-side, because things can only get bigger and better on night two. Firstly, there’ll be a piñata — and for ideal baseball-batting smashing of piñatas, one requires decent music to get in the swing of things. Number 90 have this well thought out: expect compilations from Late Night Tales, along with music from the all-time favourite record label Rough Trade.
Keep your stamina up for Saturday, when classic birthday games come into play (yes! prizes!) with limbo sessions and a Starlight Boutique glitter camp. Warning — you will be finding glitter in odd places all over for the subsequent weeks, but it’ll be totally worth it. Vinyl spinning will be done by the fabulous Phonica Records alongside Slothboogie, so show off your best dance moves and mingle with the unicorns while you’re at it.
Sunday is recovery mode. Sort your appetite out with something from their awesome healthy menu: a hearty roast, super food salad or a juicy vegan burger, whilst chilling out to a mixture of funk, soul and reggae from Russ Ryan and DJ Scratchy. A retro record stand selling vinyls will also be set up in the bar, so music lovers can invest in some Birthday Weekend mementos.
What we love most about Number 90 is that they’re not just holding this big bash for the sake of it, they’re also doing it to say kudos to their friends, neighbours and brand affiliates —part of their ethos is to maintain Hackney Wick’s unique and close-knit community.
So go on, get your party hats ready, go have some cake and skip along to Number 90 to blow out the candles with them.
