A Regal Affair: Afternoon Tea for Queen Lizzy’s 90th Birthday

Queen Lizzy will hit the ripe-old-age of 90 on Thursday 21st April, and because we can’t all attend her birthday bash, we figured it’s best we sort ourselves out with our own festivities. And what could be more typically British and regal than booking in for The Queen’s Royal Afternoon Tea at the Lanes of London?

The Mayfair restaurant and bar at the London Marriott Hotel, Park Lane, is perhaps the most fitting venue to be kicking off the celebrations — in fact, we love that it’s almost overtly clichéd. It’s stylish yet casual, and appropriately set against two of London’s most paramount attractions —Hyde Park and Marble Arch — so that post-afternoon tea meandering is definitely on the cards.

And of course, the afternoon tea will be quintessentially British and royal inspired, with Her Majesty’s favourite dishes and ingredients featuring in some of the dainty delights.

This includes White peach Melba macaroons to represent the white peaches grown in the greenhouses of Windsor Castle that Queen Elizabeth has a particular fondness for; her favourite tea Earl Grey will feature within a dessert; and classic interpretations of the Victoria sponge cake and Coronation chicken sandwich first created in honour of the Queen’s 1953 coronation. Gaawww, what a tribute indeed.

Guests can opt for a glass of champagne for an added extra, or Her Majesty’s favourite cocktail, a Gin and Dubonnet Cocktail — and honestly, what’s an afternoon tea without a little tipple, if not to cheers Lizzy’s milestone, but for your own sake and enjoyment?

Can’t make it on Thursday? Well God save the thanks be to the Queen, that the special Afternoon Tea menu will be available throughout April to September — daily from midday until5pm. Who’s birthday next?
