Oh Spring! How we love thee! The sun is trying to sneak out on a more frequent occasion, the blooms are set to burst and our Prosecco bottles are chilled to the core, just waiting to be popped for that garden party — or, for those rooftop drinks and dinner we all love here in London.
Speaking of, Des McDonald and Selfridges’ iconic rooftop restaurant Forest, is set to re-open on 24th March with a ‘Spring’ in its step for yet another buzzing season. The pop-up winter forest and cabin bar that took residency over Christmas and January has been replaced with the Spring version. Des McDonald advised that the concept is “inspired by Britain’s lush forest and woodlands and the menu will celebrate the best of British spring produce with Welsh lamb, wild boar, foraged mushrooms and seasonal vegetables and fruit”. We think this sounds dee-lightful.
Moreover, the Forest is the perfect place to escape the hectic hustle and bustle of Oxford Street or other such Soho-sauntering. Located on top of London’s favourite department store, Selfridges, the Forest even has a dedicated express lift to take you straight to the heart of the oasis. A vibrant ‘living wall’ of plants and blooming spring perennials will welcome you to the area, with the restaurant having been modishly decorated with gorgeous spring colours, botanical prints and natural plants (no fake IKEA plants here). The terrace will have a separate entrance and a wooden bar that will serve a bespoke sharing cocktail list, magnums of wine and champagne. There are even some cute little potting sheds (available for hire) that are bound to transport you to the English country gardens — those with a green thumb could get motivated to start sowing seeds.
But the only seeds to sow will be that appetite and thirst that needs attending to, and that it very much will be here. You can even come for breakfast —served until 11am on weekdays, there’s organic muesli, seven grain French toast and Coconut yogurt and granola to get you roaring for the workday.
Come lunch and dinner time, the menu continues with its fresh and tasty options with a selection of small plates including, Diver Scallops, broad beans & Black Pudding and Seared beef, salt cured egg and Keen’s Cheddar crisp. An array of main dishes include Slow cooked wild boar and buckwheat pasta; Charred Welsh lamb ribs served with garden herb sauce and Cod “a la plancha” with shaved asparagus, peas and lovage.
And because you can’t go past any of Head Pastry Chef Siobhan Ambrose’s sweet treats, the popular Chocolate Forest might win your heart, or perhaps the Honey & raspberry sabayon will weaken your knees more so.
Spring can’t come soon enough. Take us to this enchanting little Forest please.
