Decisions around dining out in Kings Cross are getting tougher and tougher of late— the revitalized area has become quite the foodie hotspot, what with the likes of Dishoom, Drake & Morgan, German Gymnasium and Vinoteca all tempting our palates. Yet we beg you to not deliberate: just commit to The Lighterman.
The highly anticipated new pub, dining room and bar, The Lighterman is swinging its doors open on Tuesday 29th March. And it’s not small — spanning the entire eastern side of the square, the brand new, three-level standalone building will offer all-day drinking and dining, with canal-side alfresco seating too, perfect for those impending summer months.
Named after the Victorian-era workers who operated ‘lighters’, flat-bottomed goods barges, on the River Thames and London’s canals, The Lighterman building has been designed by award-winning architects, Stanton Williams and the interiors decked out by Open House. Think minimalist and industrial-like — exposed concrete walls and a neutral pared-back colour scheme to keep it raw and simple. The large open spaces mean no more awkward elbowing moments, and the floor-to-ceiling glass windows providing optimum panoramic views of London. It’s big, it’s flashy and manages to seamlessly move you from the casual after-work drink vibe, through to top-notch dining.
Speaking of dining, the contemporary British all-day menu is being administered by Executive Chef Diego Cardoso and looks set to whet the appetites of everyone in its vicinity — employees at Google, The Guardian and the students at UAL certainly won’t be taking their leftovers and homemade sandwiches for lunch anymore. We haven’t seen the entire menu (still under hush hush), but with a wood-fired grill and pizza oven on site, one can only begin to dribble —an English Grill Rack, 35 day dry-aged Lake District sirloin and Taleggio, green olives, potato & rosemary organic spelt flour flat bread are just a few napkin-provoking dishes.
And lest we forget about the beverages: the extensive drinks menu will include draught & bottled beers, craft ales and seasonal cocktails, together with a well-curated and affordable wine list.
For those that want a sneak peak, The Lighterman will http://www.bigleaguekickball.com/category/press/ cheap soma overnight saturday delivery soft launch from Tuesday 22nd March to Monday 28th March with 50% off food.
