Alan Rickman has died aged 69 after a battle with cancer, his family revealed. The charismatic actor was best known for his role as Professor Snape in Harry Potter.

While showing his sensitive side in films like 1990’s Truly Madly Deeply, 1995’s Sense and Sensibility, and Love Actually, he was known for playing screen villians. His bad boy roles including the role of Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Hans Gruber in Die Hard, and his Bafta-winning performance as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
A family statement said: “The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends.” Only last year, he had secretly married his teenage sweetheart, Rima Horton, after 50 years together.
