Luckily for fragrance fiends, 2016 presented the world with some sumptuous new scents from beloved iconic brands and niche newcomers alike. Here’s our pick of some of the finest new perfumes you should seriously consider buying for that special someone in your life this Christmas. Nostrils at the ready and away we go…
Jo Malone – Basil & Neroli Cologne – from £43 for 50ml
Taking cues from London’s swinging, hedonistic past, Basil & Neroli is a lively, playful little number that harmonises the crisp freshness of basil and floral notes of neroli. Throw in cedar needle, white musk and orange bigarade into the mix and you have the beautiful, botanical alchemy one expects from a Jo Malone scent. Inspired by the urban gardens and leafy green squares London has to offer, Basil & Neroli will inject the joys of summer into winter.
Eight & Bob – Memoires de Mustique eau de toilette – £115 for 100ml
Given that Mustique was the playground of The Stones and many-a Royal, we’re certain it does indeed have a lot of cool memories to be evoked – especially in olfactory form. This delightful scent from prestige French cologne brand Eight & Bob does just that thanks to exotic top notes of bergamot, petit grain and neroli, followed by orange blossom and jasmine.
Ghost – Whitelight eau de toilette – £34 for 50ml
Ghost have long been the purveyor of adorable scents at affordable prices and their latest, Whitelight – exclusively available at The Perfume Shop – is a fab addition to the family. We love the swooping crescent moon-shaped bottle and the juicy mix of fresh pear, mandarin, jasmine, violet and patchouli.
Acqua di Parma – Peonia Nobile eau de parfum – from £76 for 50ml
As pretty as the peonies which underpin its name, Acqua di Parma’s Peonia Nobile is a fresh, floral new addition to their stunning perfume portfolio. Taking inspiration from the spectacular array of peonies that carpet the gardens of noble Italian villas each spring, the fragrance blends peony blossoms with Turkish rose and geranium. It isn’t a floral assault on the sense however, vibrant black pepper, amber, patchouli and musk lend a rich warmth to this must-try fragrance’s heart.
Amouroud – Santal de Indes eau de parfum – £145 for 100ml exclusively from Harrods
Part of the new Amoroud series by American perfume pioneers, The Perfumer’s Workshop, Santal des Indes is decadently luxurious new fragrance. Think: Tom Ford’s scents on steroids. Rich, rarefied, intoxicating and mysterious, its layers combine musky vetiver, incense, Moroccan leather and Chinese cedar wood. Housed in a stunning, weighty black flacon, its a showstopper of an addition to the most discerning of dressing tables.
Bulgari – Rose Goldea eau de parfum – from £74 for 50ml
If iconic jeweller Bulgari’s dazzling jewels are a teensy bit out of your budget this Christmas, you can still wow the woman in your life with their seductive new scent, Rose Goldea. Inspired by their Serpenti collection and the sensuality of Cleopatra, the bottle itself is unadulteratedly luxurious courtesy of a regal gold collar. As its name would suggest, the cornerstone of the fragrance is rose petals – yet sweet pomegranate, jasmine absolute and essence of white intense also intertwine to make this a perfume truly fit for an Egyptian queen.
Versace – Eros Pour Femme eau de toilette – from £42 for 30ml
Eros was, of course, the god of love, and if this heavenly scent from Versace doesn’t ping a Cupid’s arrow right through your loved-one’s heart we don’t know what will. Starring flirty freesia and fresh citrus accords like Sicilian lemon and mandarin, the perfume’s base notes of white patchouli, wood musk and ambrox inject a brooding lustfulness into the mix. And can we talk about the bottle? Versace’s signature Medusa head gleams magnificently in gold upon the envy-inducing flacon.
Jimmy Choo – Illicit Flower eau de toilette – from £36 for 40ml
The name might sound like something of an oxymoron (just how can a flower get up to no good?) but the perfume does indeed live up to it’s mysterious title; delicate floral accords of rose jasmine and freesia are given a naughty sensual kick courtesy of intense sandalwood and beguiling musk. Perfectly pretty with irresistibly flirtatious overtones. We love.
Murdock London – Patchouli – £70 for 100ml
Once spritzed, all too often colognes lose their potency, such is their fleeting nature. Murdock London’s awesome portfolio of colognes, however are armed with decent staying power – testament to their artisanal quality. Especially intoxicating is their deliciously exotic Patchouli cologne; an oh-so British yet bohemian concoction which unites spices like cardamom, nutmeg and black pepper with delicate middle notes of Indian rose and Spanish geranium. Of course, at its beating heart is intense patchouli. A distinctly refined affair, there’s nary a joss stick in sight.
Versace Dylan Blue eau de toilette – from £37 for 30ml
“Dylan Blue is the essence of the Versace man today,” explains Donatella. “It’s a fragrance full of character and individuality, an expression of a man’s strength and also his charisma.” Bold and sexy, Dylan Blue is everything you’d expect from a Versace fragrance. Evoking the Mediterranean, its an aquatic number with a zingy, citrussy punch of grapefruit, hint of fig leaf and spicy notes of saffron an tonic bean. A head-turning scent for guys of a gym-honed persuasion.
DSquared2 WILD – from £44 for 30ml exclusively from Harvey Nichols
Wild by name, wild by nature, Dean and Dan aka Dsquared2’s new fragrance is a love letter to man’s connection to the natural and urban jungles that surround him. From the oh-so-cool bondage-esque bottle, to the woody-spicy notes of opoponax, resin and vegetal amber, it’s a scent which will carry him from from office to after-dark fun in one simple spritz.
Jimmy Choo – Man Intense eau de toilette – from £45 for 50ml
Continuing the really rather welcome trend of houses releasing more potent versions of their existing fragrances, Jimmy Choo Man Intense is a richer, more sensual remix of their signature Jimmy Choo Man scent. Combining lavender, black pepper and patchouli as its launchpad, the fragrance is unashamedly masculine, yet with tender notes of honeydew melon and tonka bean, has an elegant, delicate edge.
FOR HIM AND HER
Zadig & Volataire – This is Her! £70 for 100ml and This is Him! £55 for 100ml
Fresh from the stable of achingly hip Parisian brand, Zadig & Voltaire, their new his n’ hers fragrance pairing hits all cool notes. Housed in bottles resembling an ice block chiselled in half, the perfect pair (his black, hers white) are made for nestling together side-by-side. This is Him! is a masculine affair starring spicy incense, black pepper, sandalwood and warm vanilla whilst This is Her! is sensual and feminine without being overly sweet or cloying. Think: Arabian jasmine, pink peppercorn and chestnut.
Hugo Boss – BOSS THE SCENT for him and her eau de toilette – from £47 for 50ml
Hugo Boss have been a go-to fragrance brand from guys and gals since time immemorial and for a reason: they’re both affordable and reliably nostril-tingling. New for 2016, their THE SCENT series is about one thing: pure seduction. Harmonising ginger, lavender and burnished leather, the men’s fragrance sweetly caresses your olfactory senses, meanwhile the woman’s version mixes sweet honeyed peach and freesia with a heart of rich roasted cocoa.
