This year marks the 30th anniversary of Punk, and fittingly, one of the biggest trends out there at the moment is subscribing to the movement’s D.I.Y ethos. Yes, we’re talking patches, badges and pins. Of course, for most of us, the last time these were cool was sometime in our early teens, when being hip meant having the right backpack and scented gel pens, but there’s nothing twee or childish about this new craze – it’s more to do with fashion’s new-found obsession with personal expression and making a unique statement. And unlike most trends, it’s a cheap one. So dig out that pair of old battered 501’s and get crafty – here’s some cool labels that will help you stay ahead of the curve. The best thing? You can’t get it wrong – go all out (take inspiration from Marc Jacobs SS16 show) or keep it simple with one strategically placed embellishment, there are no rules!
Itchy Scratchy Patchy
The brainchild of Brit model Edie Campbell and her best pal, artist Christabel MacGreevy, Itchy Scratchy Patchy, does exactly what it says on the label. Ie wonderfully absurd and tongue-in-cheek iron-on patches. Voluptuous pole dancers, sumo wrestlers, female bodybuilders – those are some of the most memorable designs, but before you dismiss the whole venture as plain silly, the girls have got the seal of approval from Dover Street Market who were the first to stock their label, and a good number of celebrity fans like Bella Hadid or Love Magazine’s Katie Grand. And you can join that trendy crowd for less than £20.
House of Holland
Punk might have given birth to D.I.Y fashion, but this year’s take on it is definitely more light-hearted than rebellious – so look no further than HoH. Henry Holland has always taken punk’s irreverence and camped it up for the 21st century, and his glam-but-slightly-tacky accessories are the best example. We love this trippy, in-yer-face bug brooch inspired by 70’s Vegas. Also, check out his retro-kitsch charms – you can choose between cigarette, hot dog and martini ones. Sounds like a good party to us.
Macon & Lesquoy
Another brand purely in the business of making fashion patches and badges, Macon & Lesquoy (just don’t ask us to pronounce it!) create unique hand embroidered jewels, taking inspiration from royal and military decorations. But if the starting point is quite hi-brow, the end result is nothing but. The aesthetic is part Native American Indian embroidery, part an LSD-induced visions. Perfect for piling up.
Hedi Slimane may be no more at the helm, but his legacy at Saint Laurent lives on. It can be talked about forever, but it can also be described in one word: attitude. Well, nothing says attitude like this set of come-get me pins.
Last but no least, the queen of grown up customisation. Mixing high and low, Anya Hindmarch has created a range of leather stickers inspired by the ones she put on her notebooks as a child. To put it simply: luxe craftsmanship meets Tony the Tiger. The collection (a fun side project that turned into a longterm line) is ever growing, but our faves are the classic googly eyes, smileys, and comic book speech bubbles. For the child in you.
