We set the same trap for ourselves every year: that next iPhone is always on the horizon, like a mirage in the distance growing ever-closer. Then every year we cancel our contracts and empty our wallets to get hold of the latest shiny piece of Apple hardware.
Rest assured this September has been no exception, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, you would have noticed that earlier this week Apple dropped their iPhone 6 – and despite the myriad of criticism the tech has received (bending, not connecting to 4g)here are six reasons that make snapping up the iPhone 6 a no brainer.
1. It’s Bigger.
Yes we all remember that Apple when apple denounced the developing trend in android based handsets to continue to push the boundaries of what is an acceptable screen size, but once we’ve all stopped screaming ‘hypocrite!’ At Apple and just accept that Apple is responding to the demands of the smartphone audience, then we can just accept that a larger iPhone is a good thing in more ways than one.
The new iPhone comes in two models, the iPhone 6 at 4.7 inches and the iPhone 6 plus at 5.5 inches, the latter is certainly creeping toward ‘phablet’ territory, but is all the better for it. Both screens now boast larger resolutions meaning better picture quality, the iPhone 6 is 1334 x 750 and the iPhone 6 plus an impressive 1920 x1080 (full HD on an iPhone? It’s a thing of beauty!) .
The benefits of larger screens with higher resolutions is obvious. It makes browsing the web, watching videos and playing games all the more enjoyable and if that wasn’t enough the iPhone 6 plus also allows you to flip an interfaces or apps that are usually locked to portrait views, to a landscape view. Despite this larger screen sizes, both models are still surprisingly slim and light, weighing in at almost as much as the iPhone 5, as for its pocket fitting functionality, well just buy trousers with larger pockets.
2. Picture Perfect
The Android market is currently undergoing a Mega Pixel arms race, with each new handset boasting more pixels than the last. Some handsets even clock in at a massive 41MP, but just because your pictures are bigger it doesn’t necessarily make them better, a fact which Apple understands. So rather than entering into the pixel war with its Android competitors, Apple will help your drunken nightclub selfies, look as best as possible with improved image stabilisation a faster autofocus and allowing improved customisations with the exposure and the focus.
There’s also a cool 240 frames per second mode that allows you to film in slow motion, so now all those sweet matrix moves can be captured just the way you intended it.
3. Apple Pay
The new iPhone 6 may not revolutionise the smartphone market significantly, but it is however, giving us a little taste of the future with Apple Pay. So who remembers when credit cards were first introduced? No neither do we, but you’ll remember when credit cards were replaced by contactless payment.
Those wallet crippling impulse buys will be that much easier with Apple’s latest form of digital currency is all you need do is simply place the iPhone 6 near a contactless reader, the payment method may not currently be widespread, but Apple plan on having us paying for the weekly shop with our iPhones pretty soon
4. More Horse Power
The iPhone 6 boasts a much faster processor, okay so a new CPU may not be the most interesting and flashy feature of the iPhone 6 but it’s still extremely important, higher resolutions and larger screens means that the iPhone now has more pixels to push around the screen and buying into the latest iPhone hardware now, will mean your handset is supported by the latest apple software right through to the end of your 24 month contract, so all those issues current iPhone 4 users are having with iOS 8, won’t be an issue for the iPhone 6.
There is also a new motion co-processor built in that will allows health apps to monitor your movements, so now even your iPhone will know when you haven’t been exercising (how long till Siri has us running laps? ).
5. More Storage
Screen size wasn’t the only area where the iPhone beefed up a little, the iPhone 6 now comes with a possible 128 GB of internal storage, which is double that of the largest iPhone 5’s. 128 GB internal storage may at first sound like overkill particularly for a smartphone, but as quality of pictures and videos we capture increases, so does the amount of space they take up on our hard drives.
That extra storage will come in handy as we enter into the latest version of Apples mobile operating system iOS 8, the improved software will allows for larger and more visually impressive games to be released on iOS.
So by snapping up the 128 GB iPhone 6 you’ll be able to game, film and take pictures to your heart’s content, without needing to worry about deleting files for a good while
6. Extra Life!
So with all these fancy new bells and whistles the iPhone 6 is going to need the power to back them up. Both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have a battery life that will go for longer than most of its android competitors. Reviews about the iPhone 6 are reporting that the iPhone 6 plus can even go for a full 2 days without needing to re-charge, something which we wish we could all do.
The hardware and software in smartphones is improving constantly, but battery lives have failed to keep up. Even the latest high end android handsets are out of steam after just a few furious hours of angry birds. But the average battery life of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus clocking in between 11- 13 hours of standard usage, you’ll have plenty of time to play with all the new features of the iPhone 6 before you have to put it to bed.
