Just when you think Nintendo have run out of ways to surprise us, they then go and do something like this.
The first piece of downloadable content for Mario Kart 8 does not feature extra characters to select or additional tracks for you to zoom around in, instead it features perhaps the most bizarre piece of product placement in video gaming history.
Japanese video gaming and German luxury car making combine as three cars from Mercedes will become available for Mario and co to race in.
Two are classic vehicles from the car manufacturer’s illustrious history, the 1957 300 SL Roadster and the 1934 W 25 Silver Arrow Formula racing car. More cynically however is the third inclusion, the GLA, the new upcoming compact SUV, which has obviously been included as a way of promoting the new vehicle to as wide (and nerdy) an audience as possible.
You may scoff at how much of a cash-in this may seem, but it is being released for free. Had Nintendo tried to charge us for this slice of corporate pimping then that would have been another matter. Not only that, but it does come with some patches and tweaks to the game itself, such as a map display being added onscreen and coin collection and win/loss records for online play.
So if you can live with having German engineering shoved down your throat this should be well worth the O pounds and O pence you’ll be paying for it. Even if the sight of Bowser driving a grey Merc is just plain wrong.
These updates will be hitting before the summer’s end. In the meantime check out the trailer below, and hope that some meatier, more Mario orientated DLC is on its way.
