Autumn has crept upon us in secret – even though the weather is more summery than it was during most of the actual summer, it is indeed September now. Holidays are ending, days are getting noticeably shorter so we need something to keep us entertained. And what’s better at that than returning series? The main season doesn’t start for a couple more weeks, but there’s lots to chose from already. We picked the best in our TV Highlights – here’s what to keep up with on the small screen this week.

Poldark – Sunday 4th September, 9pm – BBC One

Bending the rules again slightly here, but we cannot not include Poldark in our list. And really, Sunday evenings when you are already thinking about the week ahead, wishing the weekend lasted just a tiny bit longer, those hours are part of said week. BBC One does the best they can to make us feel better – their period drama, Poldark, is returning with its second season and they are promising pure drama to keep us going between episodes. Ross Poldark, Elizabeth, Demelza and George Warleggan are all back to brighten our Sunday nights with love triangles, tension, intrigue and rivalry.

Rio 2016 Paralympics – 7th-18th September – Channel 4

“The Superhumans are back!” – says Channel 4 and whether we agree with the controversial slogan, the Rio Paralympic Games start on Wednesday and we are definitely in for some tense races and celebratory moments. As the official presenter, Channel 4 is going to broadcast every event during the 11 days of the Games – so if you prefer sport to series, it’s worth it to stay in more this week. Check out Channel 4’s guide on how to follow the Paralympics here.

From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series – Wednesday, 7th September – Netflix

Horror fans, rejoice! Based on cult film From Dusk Till Dawn, Robert Rodriguez’s series is coming back with its third season this week – and it sure as hell looks scary and bloody. In a word of vampire-snake hybrids (culebras) the Gecko brothers seem to be facing new enemies in proper supernatural crime series fashion… Maybe save the new episodes to daylight!

Better Things – Thursday, 8th September, 8pm – FX

After all the intrigue, tension and horror, you might want to give yourself some rest with a seriously funny new comedy – Pamela Adlon’s and Louis C.K.’s Better Things starts on Thursday and is ready to give you some giggles for the rest of the week. The show that follows a single mother of three daughters struggling to earn a living in Hollywood is not the first joint project of Adlon and C.K. – they’ve worked together on Louie as well. Not convinced yet? Check out this Game of Thrones-inspired teaser and you will be!
