The ongoing crisis in the Middle East provides plenty of opportunities for fiction, but more than a few challenges, too. How do you capitalize on all the inherent opportunities for drama – religion, patriotism, globalization – without exploiting the situation?
Hugo Blick’s new series eight-part The Honourable Woman follows Nessa Stein (Maggie Gyllenhaal), an aspiring peacemaker who witnessed the assassination of her Zionist father as a child. When a Palestinian businessman is killed, however, she and her brother, Ephra (Andrew Buchanan), finds themselves under surveillance by MI6.
As well as all these topical thriller elements, The Honourable Woman also features an outstanding cast, including Stephen Rea, Lindsay Duncan, Eve Best, and Tobias Menzies. All that remains to be seen is if Blick’s writing and direction can shoulder the weight of these international themes.
The first episode goes out on BBC2 at 9pm, Thursday, July 3rd.
