Born and bred in the euphoric isle of Ibiza, the party-loving Mambo Brothers are famed for their unashamed pleasure seeking ways, electronic musical knowledge, sultry sunset parties at Cafe Mambo and their love of a good strawberry daiquiri.
Mitra Wicks caught up with the boisterous pair on a recent trip to the island that never sleeps and discovered some essential Ibiza top tips, such as only booking a one way flight on your first visit and always remembering your sunglasses before embarking on a debaucherous all nighter…
What was the inspiration and vision behind Cafe Mambo?
The inspiration and vision all came from our parents, Javier and Carolina. Back in 1994 they saw an opportunity to buy an old house that was sitting next to the only bar in that area, Café Del Mar and to try the simple formula of selling food and cocktails with good accompanying music. In a time before the internet and mobile phones, it’s amazing that very quickly Mambo became the number one hang out spot for the electronic music industry. That really is testament to the hard work and vision that our parents had way back then
Describe the Ibiza experience in one sentence
Come without a plan or return ticket and have an open mind to discover the real island!
Why did you choose the name Cafe Mambo? Is there a story behind it?
All the family and friends liked it from the beginning. There isn’t a particular story behind it, everyone just seemed to have a great feeling about it
Describe your ideal 24 hours in Ibiza
Wake up early to have a good breakfast at Hostal La Torre and take a little time to feel the peace in that place. Then we’d get into our Mehari and drive around the coast and quieter roads, stopping off to have a swim at one of the pristine secluded beaches in the north. After that it would be fresh fish at the Chiringuito at Cala Gracioneta followed by another swim in the clear waters there. An afternoon siesta would be essential preparation for the evening! Head down to Mambo for some daiquiris at sunset and then it’s party time! Tip: Always take your sunglasses with you when you going out in Ibiza… You never know what time do you will get back home!
Who are your favourite DJs in Ibiza?
This is a really difficult one as we have so many. But we always have a special feeling for the legends who have represented this industry for so long like Roger Sanchez or Pete Tong. We’re also fans of Nic Fanciulli, Kolsch, Luciano… the list goes on!
What’s your favourite cocktail on the Cafe Mambo menu?
Without doubt the Strawberry Daiquiris!
Describe one of the most memorable nights at Cafe Mambo
Mambo In The Mix was the first charity event that we organised a few years back. It was great fun seeing some of the worlds biggest DJs serving drinks and making Hot Dogs!
Which closing parties do you recommend?
All of them! 🙂 Especially Space this year as its gonna be the last ever closing. We are both really honoured to be playing there for this final party
What are your top tips for anyone coming to Ibiza for the first time?
Don’t get a return flight… you’ll be wasting your money!
What’s the best and worst thing thing about working with your brother?
Christian: Being a DJ its actually not such a bad thing as there’s so many hours waiting at airports and in hotel lobbies. We spend long hours together but it’s actually nice having someone to always talk to. The worst thing is always having to fix my brothers hair!!!
Alan: The best is that it’s always good to have your older brother taking care of you.
The worst… having my brother with a hangover fixing my hair!
Cafe Mambo, Carrer de Vara del Rey, 07820 Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza.
